Create a topicVitamin A (VA) is an essential nutrient for normal vision, immunity, reproduction, among other functions. Humans obtain VA through diet, either as preformed VA (retinol) or as provitamin A carotenoids (β-carotene, ⍺-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin). VA deficiency is considered a global public health problem and often occurs because of low VA consumption. This study aimed at describing the VA intake, expressed as retinol activity equivalents (RAE), by the Brazilian population, according to the geographic region. Data were collected from the food consumption module of the 2008-2009 and 2017-2018 Household Budget Survey (IBGE, 2011; 2020), and a database was elaborated to calculate the mean values of carotenoids or retinol in the diet, which were selected from the Brazilian Table of Food Composition (TBCA-USP, 2019). VA average intake was 372 µg RAE/day/person in 2008-2009 and reduced 17% in 2017-2018, but it was not significantly different (p>0.05). The highest consumption occurred in the Northeast region (455 and 416 µg RAE in 2008-2009 and 2017-2018, respectively). VA intake in the North (429 µg RAE) and Midwest regions (414 µg RAE) were higher in 2008-2009 than in 2017-2018 (-40% and -29%, respectively) (p<0.05). Neither the recommended dietary allowance nor the estimated average requirement was achieved. The VA consumption levels in the Brazilian diet were lower than the dietary reference for intake. In Brazil, VA deficiency is a moderate public health problem, especially in the Northeast and in some places in the Southeast and North regions. Our findings indicate that the consumption in the Southeast is lower than in the North region and the average intake in Brazil. It is necessary to develop strategies to encourage and improve food consumption, especially the carotenogenics ones, to prevent and combat hypovitaminosis A, because nowadays it provides only 20-30% of VA.
