EVALUATION OF SPICES LABEL ADJUSTMENTS TO CURRENT LEGISLATION

The veracity of information contained in food labels is fundamentation for healthy eating. The objective of the present work was evaluate suitability of seasoning labels marketed in city of Imperatriz (Maranhão). Thirty-nine seasoning labels in differents packages (sachet, pots and packs) and flavors were analyzed with a checklist prepared based on the current norms and laws for food labelling, subdivided into 8 categories. It was observed that 58.9% of the labels presented at least one type of non-conformity with legislation and only 41.1% were fully in accordance with the established in the Brazilian legislation. Among 8 categories analyzed, the one presenting the largest amount of non-compliant items was the category for "consumer information", with high incidence for the lack of customer service. In category of "warning" the nonconformity More frequent was the absence of allergenic ingredients printed in text box, bold, and in featured color. The results identified the need for more intense and effective supervision to enable the consumer less exposure to the risks of inadequate food consumption and larger transparency of the information provided by manufacturer.
