ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL OF ARTEMISIA ANNUA TEA IN DIFFERENT PREPARATION FORMS

The Artemisia annua, is a plant with many benefits and important properties and one of these benefits is antioxidant activity. Due to the importance of these antioxidant compounds, the work aimed to perform different antioxidant activity methods and to evaluate the content of phenolic compounds in the plant A. annua, using different methods to prepare the tea of this plant. The dry plant was donated by CPQBA-UNICAMP. The first method used to prepare the tea the leaves were boiled in water during 10 minutes, left in rest and filtered. Secondly, it was added boiling water in the dry leaves, shaken and left to rest during 10 minutes and filtered. And third, after the addition of the boiling water, the mixture was shaken and covered during 10 minutes and then filtered. After it was performed the antioxidant activity using DPPH, according to Lopes-Lutz et al. (2008) and the method of ABTS, according to Antunes et al. (2010). The content of phenolic compounds was determined by the reagent Folin-Ciocalteu, according to Singleton e Rossi (1965). Based on DPPH and ABTS results, all the samples and the standard BHT showed an activity dose dependent, which means, the measure wherein increased the concentration, the activity antioxidant increased. It was observed in the two methods that the sample that had the highest antioxidant activity was that the leaves were boiled in water for 10 minutes. This corroborated with the results obtained by the Folin-Ciocalteu method in which the same treatment was that obtained the highest phenolic compound content. The antioxidant analysis demonstrated that the tea of A. annua has a high capacity of reduce the radical DPPH and ABTS and had high phenolic content demonstrating natural antioxidant action.
