Physical exercise increases total energy expenditure, leads to a progressive water loss and causes oxidative stress. Rapid water and electrolyte replacement during exercise may prevent disturbances in fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, maximizing athletic performance. Isotonic beverages have been formulated using chemical additives, coloring and flavouring agents. The use of fruits and vegetables for isotonic beverages preparation offers a new perspective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hydration capability of an isotonic beverage from fruits and vegetables (IDFV). The legally ethical committee has approved this work. Amateur soccer players (society) were divided in two equal groups: control (CG) and analytical (AG) with hydric loss reposition with water and IDFV, respectively. Soccer society has two 20 minutes halves with a 5 minutes interval. Athletes from AG consumed the IDFV at 0, 15, 30 and 45 minutes of physical exercise, with a total consumption of 250ml. CG consumed 250mL of water during training. All players were instructed to consume 500 ml of water two hours before soccer training. To assess hydration status, changes in body weight, thermoregulatory sweat test and urine color and specific gravity were evaluated. Results show that only players from CG lowered their body weight, while some players in AG have gained weight. Urine coloration vary significantly in 75% of individuals in CG becoming darker, whereas in AG urine color remained the same or cleared. The urine specific gravity in CG increased in 75%, while in AG decrease in 75% and remained the same in 25% players.
