GELATIN FILMS INCORPORATED WITH PYROLYZED SUGARCANE BAGASSE

Favoritar este trabalho

We aimed to produce and characterize gelatin films containing pyrolized sugarcane bagasse. We evaluated how the pyrolysis temperature (PT) and the concentration of pyrolyzed sugarcane bagasse (PSB) affected film properties using a 22central composite design. A multi-response analysis furnished the optimal film formulation, to obtain films with larger resistance to break and low WVP. We prepared gelatin films by the casting method using glycerol as plasticizer (30 g glycerol/100 g gelatin). PSB was added to the gelatin films at concentrations of 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, and 1.8 g PSB/100 g. PSB was produced at five pyrolysis temperatures: 559, 600, 700, 800, and 842°C. PSB concentration and PT affected the tensile strength, elongation at break, Young’s modulus, moisture, and water vapor permeability of the films. Higher PSB concentrations produced a denser polymer matrix with greater mechanical strength and lower elongation at break. Meanwhile, PT elicited an inverse behavior compared with PSB: higher PT afforded more elongable and less resistant films. On the other hand, higher PSB concentrations and higher PT furnished films with lower WVP. The optimized values were PT = 842° C and PSB = 1.4312%. The films produced under these conditions displayed high mechanical strength (30.2 MPa), low elongation at break (14.1%), and low WVP (0.29 g.mm.h-1.m-2.kPa-1).All the films were 100% soluble in water. Because we successfully incorporated PSB into the gelatin film matrix, sugarcane bagasse can be a promising additive to produce composites films of gelatin.
