CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS OF CHILEAN PROPOLIS

Favoritar este trabalho

Propolis is a strongly adhesive and resinous natural product, collected by honeybees. Usually contains different chemical compounds depending geographical, botanical origins, etc. Some compounds, such as phenolics acids and flavonoids; that have been attributed pharmacological properties (e.g. antioxidant and antibacterial). Chilean propolis must have a different botanical origin than propolis of the rest of world due the geographic location; being necessary evaluates composition and quality. The main objective this study was to determinate chemical composition and presences of bioactive compounds of propolis collected during summer season from Valparaíso region (Chile) and establish the quality in comparison with other propolis. Results obtained for chemical composition were: moisture 2.45%, ash 0.99%, wax 27.4%, pH 5.5, soluble-insoluble in ethanol 79.6%-20.3%, conductivity 208.7 µS/cm. For thermal properties were: Tg (10.3 ºC) and Tm (64.6 ºC). All results were significant different with respect other propolis.
Results of presence of bioactive compounds (phenol and flavonids content) were significantly higher in comparison with other propolis (396.9 mg GAE/g propolis and 47.8 mg QE/g propolis, respectively). Additionally, FT-IR spectra features bioactive compounds of the propolis samples have been identified. Also, was determined the antioxidant capacity (AC) that are associated to presence of these bioactive compounds. The AC was by method of free radical-scavenging activity on DPPH and ABTS for propolis. The results showed that Chilean propolis had the AC of 195.38 mg trolox/g propolis and 316.8 mg trolox/g propolis, respectively. Chilean propolis showed good physicochemical composition and quality; and high antioxidant capacity associate by presence of bioactive compounds.
