Abstract

The benefits of grape consumption are widely recognized and mostly due to phenolic compounds. These beneficial effects will depend on the antioxidant activity of these compounds on grape and its form of cultivation and production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity and cytotoxic effects of hybrid Vitis vinifera L. varieties Sweet Jubillee extracts (SJE) on human prostate cancer cell lines. Our results showed that SJE present high content of phenolic compounds ( 1047.21 ± 63.30 mg AGE/g) and strong antioxidant activity by DPPH reduction (90.42%), FRAP (129.69 mmol ferrous sulphate/g) and ORAC (131.61µmol TE/g) assays. A reduction in cell viability was identified in DU-145 (46.66%) and PC-3 (48.79%) cells after 48h treatment with SJE by MTT assay. Flow cytometry showed that the treatment with the SJE promote an inhibitory impact on cell development due to G0/ G1 arrest and high rate of early and late apoptotic cells compared to control group. The findings suggested that extract of Sweet Jubillee has its own potential as cancer chemotherapeutic agent against prostate cancer cell.
