Resumo

The Brazilian grape production reached 1,416,398 tons in 2020, generating 20 - 25% of by-products (seeds and skins) after its processing for wine and juice production. This by-product can submitted to anaerobic digestion (AD) for energy recovery. This study aimed to estimate the theoretical methane production from the AD of grape seeds and skins and its potential for bioenergy recovery and avoided greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. To estimate the theoretical methane potential, the volume of methane produced per day per Organic Loading Rate (OLR) was considered. The procedure consisted in analyzing the by-products’ Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) to calculate the reactor’s OLR and the volume of methane produced, considering an Anaerobic Digestion reactor with 40 m³ of total volume, fed with 10 m³ of grape by-products, and a Hydraulic Retention Time of 25 days. The estimated COD was 12.71 kg O2/m³, resulting in 5.084 kg O2/day (OLR), considering an average COD removal efficiency of 80% and 0.3 m3 of methane gas (CH4)/kg organic load removed, the theoretical methane production obtained was 1.22 m³/day. The methane-rich biogas generated in AD can be used for energy recovery in the grape processing industry, generating 4.1 kWh/day of electricity and 21.71 MJ/day of thermal energy in a combined heat and power engine. Considering the electricity produced from biogas, it is possible to mitigate 0.25 ton CO2/day, also avoiding energy costs for the industry. Finally, this study indicated a potential route for valorization of grape by-products in AD for methane production while promoting bioeconomy and the circular economy transition of the wine industry.
