Abstract

This study analyzes the effectiveness of the DETER and PRODES systems in detecting deforestation in the Cerrado Biome, Brazil, from 2018 to 2023. The method combines data from both systems to identify areas of vegetation suppression not mapped by DETER. The results reveal that 57% of undetected polygons are smaller than 3 hectares, particularly in the Floresta de Cocais ecoregion. The total undetected area by DETER amounts to 7,808.82 km², with the three most affected ecoregions being Araguaia Tocantins (3,517.86 km²), Alto Parnaíba (2,417.03 km²), and Floresta de Cocais (1,873.93 km²). The omissions are linked to radiometric limitations, especially in grassland formations. While DETER is effective for larger deforestation events, PRODES provides detailed annual assessments, particularly for smaller-scale activities. The integration of high-resolution satellite technologies could enhance both systems, resulting in a more comprehensive approach to monitoring and conserving the Cerrado.
