We dedicate the Proceedings of the XXI SBSR (Brazilian Symposium on Remote Sensing) to the memory of the researcher at the National Institute for Space Research – INPE, Dr. Ieda Del’Arco Sanches, who passed away on January 7, 2025. Her premature departure leaves an immeasurable gap in the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Since its 18th edition, the SBSR would not have been the same without Ieda’s effort, dedication, and ability.

Ieda studied Agricultural Engineering at the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture – ESALQ. In 2004, she completed her master’s degree in Remote Sensing at INPE, beginning her journey as a specialist in remote sensing applied to agriculture. In 2009, she completed her doctorate in Earth Sciences at Massey University, New Zealand. Back in Brazil in 2014, she completed a postdoctoral degree at the Institute of Geosciences (IG) at Unicamp. In the same year, she was accepted through a public selection process to become a researcher at INPE.

As a researcher at INPE, Ieda performed impeccably in various roles and positions. She was a permanent professor at INPE's Postgraduate Program in Remote Sensing (PGSER), and was also the coordinator of this program between 2017 and 2021. Her work in managing the postgraduate program went beyond PGSER, and she took on the role of Pro-Rector of Postgraduate Studies at INPE from 2021 to 2023. Combining research, teaching, and management, Ieda has published more than 170 works, including journal articles, books, and book chapters. She has supervised 18 doctoral and master's degree papers. Her commitment to science and the training of new researchers has made her an undisputed reference in the field. She was admired and loved by her advisees, former advisees, students, former students and work partners.

Ieda was part of the SBSR organizing committee in the 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025 editions. In this last edition, in parallel with her health treatment, Ieda actively worked on organizing the Symposium until December 2024. And it was with consternation that our community received the news of her death in January 2025.

However, her legacy lives on, inspiring future generations of researchers and scientists. Our memory is of a cheerful, optimistic, smiling, intelligent, dedicated and trustworthy person. For these reasons, the Proceedings of the XXI SBSR bear Ieda's signature, even in memoriam, and we dedicate it to her.
