Optimization of Center Pivot Irrigation Management with Mathematical Programming: A Case Study at Santa Paula Farm, MG

Abstract

Agricultural irrigation plays a key role in crop productivity and quality but faces challenges related to excessive water and energy consumption. This study proposes the optimization of irrigation management in center pivot systems through a mixed-integer linear programming model, aiming to schedule irrigation throughout the crop cycle while minimizing operational costs. The methodology involved daily analysis of the water balance, optimizing water supply based on data from the Santa Paula Experimental Farm, located in Unaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Results showed a 53.5\% reduction in operational costs (from R\$ 5,941.80 to R\$ 2,767.76), an increase in productivity (5,790 kg/ha compared to 5,676 kg/ha), and more efficient water use (232 mm versus 240 mm). The proposed approach demonstrated greater water efficiency, reduced plant water stress, and potential for application to other agricultural crops.
