Abstract

Coil slitting is a fundamental process in the steel industry. Typically, large steel coils must be cut into smaller rolls with different specifications. While the minimization of trim loss is traditionally one of the primary objectives in such problems, more realistic formulations incorporate multiple objectives, such as load balancing across slitting machines and the minimization of setup costs. This work presents an initial study based on a real-world case from one of ArcelorMittal Brasil's units. A Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed to formally represent the problem, incorporating industrial constraints and practical objectives. Additionally, a preprocessing procedure for handling real production data is presented. These data are stored in simplified text files (.txt) which can be used either as input for model generation or by a potential optimization system.
