Two-Dimensional Vehicle Loading Optimization: Integration of Better Fit Heuristics and Taboo Search

Abstract
This study presents a hybrid model for vehicle charging optimization, combining the Better Fit (BF) heuristic with the Taboo Search (TS) meta-heuristic to solve two-dimensional cargo packing problems. The goal is to minimize the number of compartments used, maximizing transport efficiency. A total of 12 lists of 300 items with different weight and volume granulometries were simulated. The results demonstrated that in 7 of the 12 lists, the exact model found solutions within the time limit, while the heuristic approach obtained solutions close to the overall optimal with significantly reduced processing time. The efficiency of the hybrid method has been proven, especially in time-constrained scenarios. The research suggests that the combination of BF and TS is a practical and effective approach to logistics optimization, with potential for future applications in different transport and logistics contexts.
