Abstract

This article presents an optimization approach to determine the optimal location and sizing of SVCs (Static Var Compensators) in power systems, aiming to improve voltage profiles and efficiently handle contingency scenarios. A VNS (Variable Neighborhood Search) algorithm was developed to minimize voltage violation under contingency scenarios and the installation cost of SVCs. Simulations on the IEEE 14-bus system validated the model’s effectiveness. The results show that the VNS algorithm finds high-quality solutions, improving voltage profiles and system security, as well as reducing voltage violations during normal operations and contingencies. This study highlights the importance of SVCs for the stability and reliability of power systems, preparing the grid for unexpected events and maintenance.
