Create a topicThe antioxidant capacity of pitayas is closely linked to their rich phytochemical composition, including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and betalains, which play a key role in promoting health. However, these constituent levels can very according to the phenotypic traits of each cultivar. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate and compare the content of total phenolics (TPC) and total flavonoids (TFC) of the cultivars ‘Boreal’, ‘Chinesa’ and ‘Roxa do Pará’ from the center west of Minas Gerais. The TPC was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteau method (Abs 420 nm) while the TFC was determined using the aluminum chloride assay (Abs 514 nm). Readings were performed using a microplate reader (Biochrom EZ Read 2000) and the results were expressed in milligrams of gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per hundred grams of fresh sample (mg 100 g-1 MF) and equivalent milligrams of quercetin (QE) per hundred grams of fresh sample (mg 100 g-1 FM) and, respectively. Subsequently, the data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by the means test (Tukey/p<0.05). Therefore, significant differences were observed (p<0.05), the cultivar 'Roxa do Pará' (221.48 mg GAE 100 g-1 FM) obtained the highest content followed by 'Boreal Red' (212.82 mg GAE 100 g-1 FM) and 'Chinesa' (210.29 mg GAE 100 g-1 FM), which are statistically equal for TPC. While ‘Boreal Red’ has the highest TFC content (29.10 mg QE 100 g-1) followed by ‘Roxa do Pará’ and ‘Chinesa’ (25.36 and 20.26 mg QE 100 g-1). The results indicate that pitayas have health-beneficial functionalities, thanks to their high levels of total phenolics and flavonoids. In addition to their protective action, the polyphenols present in the fruits also play an important role in the formation of flavor and color. In summary, the cultivars under study are an excellent choice for health.
