Abstract

In the context of psychotherapy, one of the recurrent needs is the promotion of repertoires of psychological flexibility in patients in situations of mental suffering. The present research investigated the relationship between the practice of reading and the development of psychological flexibility, based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with psychological flexibility composed of processes such as attention to the present moment, self as context and cognitive defusion, which promote a more conscious life aligned with personal values. The study is a systematic literature review in the PUBMED, Scielo, PsycNet, and CAPES Journals databases, considering articles published between 2015 and 2025. Among the results, it was found that in the researched literature there are no explicit relationships between the practice of reading and the development of flexibility, however, future research should focus its investigations on the use of reading as a therapeutic resource, its relations with avoidance and the theory of relational frames.
