Swine production chain is continuously searching technologies and innovations to bring consumer better products and more healthy. Although Brazil is the fourth largest producer and exporter of pig in the world, there is still a resistance of the population to consume this meat due to issues related to the raising and slaughtering procedures. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of the population on pig production and to understand the reasons for some of the population do not consume pig meat. Data collection was carried out from a questionnaire composed of 22 questions, shared in social networks. The closed type questionnaire consisted of multiple response and Likert type scale questions dealing with demographic aspects, consumption preferences and buying decision process. From 744 Brazilian responders, 88% were pig meat consumers. Main reasons cited by non-consumers were odor and flavor preferences, consumption habits, and animal protection issues. Most of the responders (55%) believed that chicken is healthier than pig and beef. Organic, animal welfare and antibiotic free certifications were chosen as differentials factors for which consumers would be willing to pay a higher price. Most of interviewed (89%) stated they know that exist some Brazilian legislation concerning the raising and slaughtering of pigs. However, 62% of responders believed that there are contaminants residues in pig meat, stating "hormones", "antibiotics" and "microorganisms" as major contaminants, demonstrating that have no knowledge of what is in the law. Pork companies and the scientific community must seek more ways to clarify and inform consumers about methods of nutrition, raising and slaughtering, taking greater account of the health inspection and animal welfare issues. Informing population is essential to increase Brazilian statistics of pig meat consumption.
