Abstract

Introduction: With the advancement of technology, there are several treatments for malignant neoplasms. One of the consequences of the use of antineoplastic drugs is the alteration of the biochemical indices of the blood. With the increase of pharmacological interest in plant products for the treatment of neoplasms, a promising specimen is Garcinia brasiliensis. Objectives: To evaluate biochemical parameters in the blood plasma of animals induced to solid Ehrlich's tumor and treated with extractive solutions of Garcinia brasiliensis leaves. Material and methods: The crude extract (CE) and the ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) were obtained from the leaves of G. brasiliensis. BALB/c mice were divided into 6 groups. Some animals were induced to solid Ehrlich's tumor with 0.5mL (2 x 10⁶ cell/mL) of neoplastic cells, administered subcutaneously. One group of non-induced animals and one group induced to tumor were treated with saline solution. Other two groups of non-induced animals and two groups of tumor-induced-animals were treated with CE and EAF at 10%. All treatments were administered daily, intramuscularly, for 14 days. Plasma biochemical activity measurements of AST, ALT, Gamma-GT, creatinine, urea, albumin, alkaline phosphatase, uric acid and glycemia were performed to verify CE and EAF toxicity. Results: Tumor-induced-animals compared to non-induced mice showed increased levels of ALT. Treatment with CE reduced levels of AST and gamma-GT compared to induced-non-treated animals. Similarly, EAF treatment reduced gamma-GT levels. Conclusion: G. brasiliensis extract is able to reduce blood plasma biochemical levels in animals induced with solid Ehrlich tumor.
