Abstract

Introduction: Entrepreneurship in Brazil has positively contributed to changes in the economy and society. Thus, entrepreneurs play a relevant role in this process. Entrepreneurs are individuals willing to take risks and invest in innovations. However, entrepreneurship in the context of biotechnology faces greater challenges due to the specificities of the sector, which involves the interaction of various knowledge areas and requires a high level of technological knowledge to operate in a regulated and competitive market. Objective: The objective of this study is to define the entrepreneurial process and the strategies that stimulate the development of entrepreneurial competence, which can support the entrepreneur's journey by preparing them for the agile and challenging environment of biotechnology in Brazil. Method: The research methodology was based on literature review and interviews, using the storytelling technique. Twenty entrepreneurs in the field of biotechnology were interviewed, allowing the study of the academic entrepreneurial process in biotechnology and providing information about their needs and difficulties. Results: The results indicated that entrepreneurs in the field of biotechnology possess relevant technical skills for the development of biotechnological products and services. The importance of academic support, technology transfer, and collaboration between academia and industry for the success of entrepreneurship in biotechnology was also emphasized. However, gaps were identified, such as the lack of knowledge in business management for new entrepreneurs and the need for the ability to attract resources and create value. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of developing entrepreneurial competence in the context of biotechnology, which requires a high level of technological knowledge to identify innovation opportunities. Entrepreneurial strategies include recognizing the operational and management structure of a company; seeking academic support and partnerships for technical improvement; exploring technology transfer, as well as establishing a solid network of contacts to complement competence, both for innovation and for reaching new markets.
