Abstract

Introduction: Burns affect millions of people in the world and represent a challenge for nursing, requiring specific care, thus being considered a major public health problem. Epidemiological data says that, around 300 million suffer from burns every year. Burn patients often face high costs of treatment; in healthcare, it is critical to understand the wide range of clinical, physical, emotional and psychological challenges. The management of burn patients requires a multidisciplinary approach, nursing plays a crucial role in the assessment and expert assistance ensuring successful recovery. This study aims to contribute to the health area and be useful to guide public policies and burn prevention programs, minimizing their impact on society. Characterizing hospitalized burn patients is crucial to improve care, recovery and rehabilitation. Objective: To identify the relationship between the degrees of burn, correlate it with infection biomarkers, and characterize the nursing interventions provided to patients in the Burn Care Unit of a teaching hospital in the interior of São Paulo. Material and methods: Study carried out in two stages. STEP 1: Literature review. STAGE 2: Descriptive, quantitative, non-experimental and retrospective study. Partial results: After the review, a search result of 1.590 journals was obtained, whose pre-established exclusion criteria selected 17 articles for discussion. Subsequently, a total of 99 medical records were selected, analyzed in full according to a pre-established data collection instrument. So far, based on the 17 medical records analyzed, the age limit of patients is between 20 and 60 years old, with a predominance between 31 and 40 years old (57%). The 17 medical records have laboratory tests on admission, but only five have tests 48 hours after admission. Conclusion: the unquestionable importance of the nursing professional is identified and concluded so far in the care of severely burned patients with the multidisciplinary team and more rigorous laboratory follow-up is needed in the search for quality and better outcomes for patients. That the conclusions bring double relevance: one assistential and the other academic, contributing to the formation and qualification of the health professional.
