In recent years, many studies have been conducted analyzing the effect of the consumption of yerba mate (Ilex paaguariensis A. St.-Hil.) on the state of health of
humans and animals. Irisin is a hormone secreted from muscles in response to exercise and may mediate some beneficial effects, such as weight loss and thermoregulation. This study evaluated the effects of roasted yerba mate (YM) chronic consumption in healthy mice biochemical markers of muscle and lipid metabolism. Sixteen weaned mices (21 days of life) were randomly in two groups (n=8 per group): control group (CG) and roasted yerba mate group (YMG), for 30 days. The analysis performed were irisin hormone, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and lactate blood levels. All data are reported as means with their standard errors of the mean (SEM). These results showed normal distribution and t-Student test (0.05) were applied. The diet consumption did not show difference (p>0.05) between the groups. The YMG showed lowest body weight in the last week of the experiment (CG = 46.99 ± 1.46 g; YMG = 41.76 ± 0.98 g; p=0.0238); highest irisin hormone (C = 156.1 ± 14.7 ng mL-1; YM = 174.4 ± 8.1 ng mL-1; p=0.0081) and highest TBARS (CG = 7.50 ± 0.32 µmol L-1; YMG = 10.98 ± 0.47 µmol L-1; p<0.0001); the CPK (CG = 503.75 ± 84.12 U L-1; YMG = 409.44 ± 103.12 U L-1; p=0.4901) and lactate (CG = 9.08 ± 0.51 mmol/L; YMG = 9.04 ± 0.54 mmol/L; p=0.9483) did not show difference between the groups. These findings are suggestive that roasted yerba mate chronic consumption may cause accelerated lipid mobilization and thermogenic effect by irisin up regulation, however, also increased lipid peroxidation.
