Abstract

Background: Epileptic seizures lead to the appearance of various changes, such as neurobiological, psychological, cognitive, social. Cholinergic agonists, following local or systemic injections cause electroencephalographic and behavioral changes as shown in the pilocarpine model. Animal models of seizures and epilepsy have been largely used to understand the physiological and behavioral changes associated with human temporal lobe epilepsy, mainly using wistar rats. In the current study, we aimed to characterize the electroencephalography characteristics of Non-SE (Non-status epilepticus) male rats that received pilocarpine injection. Methods: Male adult Wistar rats weighing 210–230 grams were housed under controlled conditions, with 12 h normal light/dark cycles, 22–24°C and food and water. The ethical committee for animal experimentation of Universidade Estadual de Ciências da Saúde de Alagoas (UNCISAL) analyzed the procedures of the work. Animals were injected with pilocarpine (350 mg/kg i.p.; Sigma). The recording was monitored continuously for two months and began after the fifth day in 3 Non-SE and 3 controls after pilocarpine injection. EEG analysis was performed by the end of two months of recording. Results: During the recording the cortical synchronization of high frequency waves and hippocampal theta rhythm were observed continuously in Non-SE and control animals during two months. No electrographic activity suggestive of epileptogenic seizure was observed in such groups. The recordings during the sleep-wake cycling in both groups were analyzed and did not show differences. Conclusions: These findings suggest that non-status epilepticus rats, after pilocarpine injected intraperitoneally, show electrographic recording without alterations. The recording was monitored for two months and beginning five days after pilocarpine injection.
