TEACHING CRITICAL PEDAGOGY TO PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS

I discuss my experience in teaching a course called "Critical Pedagogy" at Oranim Academic College in Israel. The profile of the students attending the course, which is varied and multi-cultural, is presented, the syllabus of the course is described, and its rationale explained. The focus is on Freire's idea of consciousness raising ("conscientização"), and the dilemmas regarding its implementation in the course. Examples are given of success in conveying the ideas of critical pedagogy to the students, as well as frustrating moments of resistance and disagreements.
