DENGUE IN A METROPOLITAN AREA IN BRAZIL

Introduction: In the municipality of Contagem, the third most populous municipality in the state of Minas Gerais, the cases and severity of dengue fever have increased between 2008 and 2018. Objective: To analyze the temporal and spatial evolution of the incidence of dengue in the city of Contagem and describe the non-epidemic and epidemic periods of the disease. Methods: This is an ecological study of probable dengue cases reported in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). The analyzes were carried out considering epidemiological cycles starting in epidemiological week (SE) 40 of the year 2011 and ending in SE 39 of the year 2017. Kernel Density was used to analyze the distribution of probable dengue cases. Results: The disease affected more women and individuals aged 20 to 29 years in both the non-epidemic and epidemic cycles. During the two epidemic cycles, in almost the entire municipality, the incidence of dengue was high, ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 per 100,000 inhabitants. Conclusion: The present study can be useful for health surveillance and contributes to intervention and control strategies focused on reducing morbidity and mortality from the disease.
