Relationship between institutions, countries' environmental performance

This article investigates the relationship between institutional factors and the environmental performance of countries, with emphasis on the perspective of the public sector as the object of analysis. Using the institutional theory approach and based on a quantitative analysis by means of quantile regression, the results reveal the negative influence of the level of wealth on environmental policies, that is, it tends to harm the environmental performance of the countries analyzed. In addition, it highlights the importance of a qualified governmental and political apparatus, the regulatory and legal environment, and financial openness to improve countries' environmental performance. The findings highlight institutional impact on environmental performance, emphasizing policies tailored to nations.
