Abstract

This paper presents an in-depth study of the integration between retaining walls and the implementation of Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete (HMBC) asphalt paving, using the Henry Wall de Carvalho Avenue and side access to the Nova Ceasa Piauí (Piauí State University) in Teresina, Piauí, as a case study. The main objective was to critically analyze the construction procedures, material selection, and costs involved, with an emphasis on the strategic importance of the retaining wall. The methodology employed combined an extensive literature review, document analysis of the project and budget, and a technical visit. The results demonstrate that a lack of adequate planning and budgeting for retaining walls can compromise the long-term continuity of the project and the safety and durability of the paving. The conclusion reinforces that adopting an integrated design approach that considers soil-structure-pavement interaction is essential to ensure efficiency, safety, and economic sustainability in road infrastructure projects, overcoming geographic and budgetary challenges with practical recommendations and technical solutions.
