Abstract

Violence and penal selectivity are concepts that pervade the trajectory of repressive actions and incarceration processes in Brazil. This study proposes to carry out an analysis of the history of prison in Brazil, discussing the criminal selectivity that has historically characterized State action, with emphasis on analyzing the number of poor, black and brown people incarcerated in the period 2018-2022. The methodology used consisted of bibliographical and documentary analysis about the proposed theme. The results showed that criminal selectivity has historically been presented as a guiding element of State action for the repression of poor and black social segments, with a process of mass incarceration in neoliberal times. In this context, it is necessary to implement public policies that can ensure social protection, as well as the extrication processes, with a view to strengthening democracy and defending citizenship.
