Abstract

Liquid crystals have been widely researched due to their intrinsic scientific interest and technological applicability. Its properties are strongly dependent on its molecular geometry, with tris(N-phenyltriazole) being a new and promising center for the synthesis of new compounds with liquid-crystalline properties, due to their planar and star-shaped geometry. In this work, we present the synthesis and characterization of two new star-shaped compounds with liquid-crystalline properties derived from tris(N-phenyltriazole) and containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole heterocycles. All compounds were characterized by IR and 1H and 13C NMR. Investigation of the thermal properties for both compounds was performed by DSC, POM and TGA and confirmed an enantiotropic liquid-crystalline behavior. Optical textures observed by POM indicate a columnar packing. Photophysical investigations demonstrated that both compounds show strong blue luminescence. New derivatives are being synthesized with the purpose of lowering the melting point without quenching the liquid-crystalline behavior.
