Resumo

The objective of the study was to observe if there is a relationship between the nutrition provided, and the method of food supply and the physical conditions and pathologies of canine females attended at the University Veterinary Hospital, through a case study and review bibliographical. Of the 20 female canines participating in the project, 12 were castrated and half were overweight. Of the overweight animals only one was diagnosed with nutrition-related disease, a female dog with pancreatitis, who consumed premium ration ad libitum and leftover food. The diet provided and the way it is provided has been shown to be a limiting factor for overweight, which favored the occurrence of pancreatitis. Animals with this important illness should be fed with a specific diet. The prevention and control of the quality of the food offered is the most effective way of not allowing the animal to develop pancreatitis.
