Resumo

The lactose is a carbohydrate directly associated with the volume of milk produced, thus, the aim of this research was to verify the effect of length of dry period on the production of lactose. Data were obtained from 67,045 complete lactations of 32,397 Holstein animals in 129 dairy farms between 1998 and 2017, provided by the Association of Holstein Cattle Breeders of Minas Gerais. The preparation of data and adjustments were conducted using the statistical program R. The highest lactose yields were observed when the animals had a dry period of 63 days for animals of parity 2 and 62 days for animals of parity 3, 4 or more. These values allow the renewal of the mammary secretory tissue for a maximum production of this component.
