Resumo

The objective was to evaluate performance, feed efficiency, ultrasound-evaluated carcass composition measures, and scrotal circumference of growing Nellore bulls according to their classification relative to residual feed intake (RFI). Data were obtained from three feed efficiency tests with a total of 420 bulls. To measure the performance and feed efficiency, GrowSafe® feed troughs were utilized. Animals were divided into three groups according to their individual RFI values. Dry matter intake (DMI) did differ (P<0,0001) among RFI groups; more feed efficient bulls presented less DMI. No differences were observed for carcass composition traits and scrotal circumference among RFI groups. The RFI is a measure that can identify more efficient animals without imparing performance, carcass composition, and reproductive traits.
