Using the Gioia Methodology to Enhance Analytic Transparency in Health and Nursing Research: The Data Structure as Methodological Artefact

Introduction
Qualitative researchers in health and nursing often face challenges in demonstrating analytic transparency when using grounded theory. While grounded theory supports inductive theory building, the analytic steps that transform descriptive data into conceptual insight are often difficult to trace. The Gioia methodology, developed in organisational studies, provides a structured analytic framework that visually connects data to emerging theory. More than a presentational tool, its data structure operates as a methodological artefact that captures the interpretive logic of qualitative analysis. This paper illustrates how integrating the Gioia approach within grounded theory enhances methodological rigour and reflexivity in healthcare research.

Methods
Drawing on a qualitative study of 25 overseas nurses working in Malta, this paper demonstrates the application of the Gioia methodology in healthcare research. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using Gioia’s systematic framework, which guided a transparent, iterative movement from participants’ accounts toward higher-level theoretical abstraction. This structured process supported the development of a grounded conceptual model encompassing personal, social, and professional aspects of acculturation.

Results
Applying the Gioia framework enhanced analytic transparency and theoretical clarity. It clarified distinctions between participant voice and researcher interpretation, leading to six aggregate dimensions that explained nurses’ acculturation experiences. Its hierarchical design (from first-order participant expressions to second-order researcher themes and aggregate theoretical dimensions) made visible the analytic steps through which empirical material became conceptual insight. The structured data display provided a transparent audit trail and strengthened the credibility of the findings.

Conclusions
The Gioia methodology’s data structure offers a reflexive and transparent framework for grounded theory analysis. Integrating this approach enhances analytic coherence, methodological transparency, and theoretical robustness, advancing the quality and trustworthiness of qualitative inquiry in health and nursing research.
