Abstract

Qualitative research data management has experienced significant evolution in the digital era. This paper examines the opportunities and challenges associated with managing qualitative data.

The review encompassed studies reporting original findings published in English between December 2020 and June 2025. The following databases were searched: Scopus, ScienceDirect, Sage Research Methods, and Taylor & Francis, utilising the following set of keywords: ("Qualitative Data Management" OR Qualitative data) AND ("Digital Era” OR “Automation" OR "Digitisation").

Ultimately, 25 studies were included in the final review. The findings across these studies indicate that the complexities of data management in the digital age necessitate careful planning. Researchers must develop data management strategies that address security, privacy, and accessibility. This entails selecting suitable software tools, establishing protocols for data backup and storage, and ensuring adherence to ethical guidelines and data protection regulations.

This overview highlights that integrating digital data management tools into qualitative research requires a balanced approach to maximise benefits while mitigating drawbacks. Researchers must assess the impact of these tools on their methodologies, ensuring that technological advancements enhance rather than undermine their qualitative inquiries. Additionally, training in digital literacy and data management skills is vital for researchers to navigate the evolving landscape of research technologies effectively. As the field progresses, qualitative researchers must remain informed about best practices and adapt their methods to leverage emerging technologies while minimising associated risks.
