Abstract
  • The integration of Next Generation NCLEX (NGN)-style questions into Open Educational Resources (OERs) represents an innovative approach to advancing nursing education. NGN questions, such as bowtie and matrix formats, promote clinical judgment and critical thinking, skills essential for safe and effective nursing practice. With OER adoption increasing in higher education, the redesign of these resources to align with licensure requirements offers an opportunity to enhance both accessibility and pedagogical rigour. This study explores the incorporation of NGN-style questions into OERs for two undergraduate nursing theory courses.
  • Informal feedback from two undergraduate nursing theory courses revealed a need for more effective practice opportunities for the licensing exam. While students valued the existing OER case studies, the open-ended questions were insufficient for exam preparation. In response, our team trained with an NGN exam question specialist to develop NGN-style questions to accompany each case study. This study aims to evaluate the impact of these questions on student engagement and perceived preparedness. At the end of Fall 2025, focus groups (n=9) with seven students, selected using purposive sampling techniques, each will be held across nine course sections. Transcripts will undergo thematic analysis to explore usability, learning experiences, and confidence-building, in line with qualitative methodologies that emphasize lived experience and interpretive meaning-making.
  • The intention is to see whether the findings demonstrate students perceiving NGN-style questions integrated into their existing OERs as more interactive and effective in bridging theory and clinical application. Students may identify benefits such as enhanced critical thinking, improved confidence in answering NGN-style questions, and increased engagement with course material.
  • Incorporating NGN-style questions within freely accessible resources can foster active learning and align with emerging educational paradigms focused on equity, adaptability, and competency-based preparation. These findings can contribute to ongoing conversations about leveraging open pedagogy and qualitative insights to enhance nursing education.
