Abstract

This article explores the use of virtual reality (VR) in qualitative research, examining its strengths, limitations, and best practices for designing rigorous research protocols. Drawing on several recent research projects conducted across diverse sectors, we illustrate how VR can be strategically leveraged to advance qualitative inquiry.

The first section provides a conceptual definition of virtual reality, clarifying what VR is—and is not. We introduce several VR systems developed by our team, offering concrete examples of how the technology can be tailored for research purposes.

The second section highlights the benefits of VR for qualitative research design. We discuss how VR enables the investigation of complex, rare, or high-risk situations that are difficult to observe in real life. By allowing researchers to manipulate, control, and reproduce contexts, VR opens new avenues for studying human experience with a level of precision and safety that traditional fieldwork often cannot achieve.

The third section outlines our mixed-methods approach, which integrates observable behavioral data collected through sensors during simulations with subjective data gathered via interviews and questionnaires. This approach demonstrates the value of triangulating these data types to develop a deeper understanding of participants’ decision-making processes and embodied experiences.

In the fourth section, we present lessons learned and practical recommendations for incorporating VR into qualitative research, emphasizing methodological rigor and ethical considerations.

Finally, the last section showcases findings from multiple studies to illustrate the depth and quality of results achievable with VR-enhanced qualitative methodologies. By bridging immersive technology and qualitative inquiry, this work contributes to expanding the methodological toolbox of social scientists and offers a compelling framework for future research.
