Introduction:
Since 2016, the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework has been widely cited to contribute to new education and pedagogy. Literature in education identified that the learning process and learning practice related to the SDG are dependent on a variety of factors. Often, scholars found that transformation in education requires transformative learning pathways. To understand such pathways, there are currently research gaps in gathering information about the connections of both perceived stakeholder values and factors such as the intrinsic interest of a learner, to the implementation of SDGs.
Goals and Methods:
To this purpose, a qualitative research approach is introduced in this study, showing how the qualitative research approach can provide more context to the education discipline. This study elaborates on adapting a research method that embeds a contextual approach to assessing multiple dimensions of sustainability.
Results:
By doing so, the findings show that a qualitative research approach can act as a robust approach to critically assess the implementation of SDG through a holistic lens and a competent scale. A micro scale qualitative research case study performed in a population of ASEAN universities provided key assessments answering to the research questions about education frameworks aligning to the SDG.
Conclusions:
This research is novel in two ways. Firstly, it provides an updated scientific finding about the relevance of qualitative research method to understand education transformation and multiple factors influencing education frameworks. Secondly, both the research methods and contextual analysis appeals to the research agenda in the field of education and data analysis, suited for all profiles of researchers.
