The increasing use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) creates possibilities and challenges in learning, teaching, and research. From the researchers' point of view, GenAI can be a support tool to enhance the various phases of a research project, namely in literature review, data collection and analysis and scientific writing, among other tasks. Objectives and Methods: To obtain a general overview of this complex topic, a bibliometric, scoping review, and framework analysis are intended to answer the question: How does the interaction with AI develop on the various ontological levels in educational research? The research generates an analytical report on the researchers' perceived competencies and provides proof through quantitative and qualitative data analysis triangulation. Data analysis was conducted along three axes: (i) bibliometric mapping (conceptual structure) utilizing data from the Scopus and Web of Science databases; (ii) scoping review (which identified knowledge gaps, surveyed literature, clarified concepts, and examined research practices); and (iii) framework analysis (a flexible and robust method for analyzing qualitative data in applied research that identified critical patterns and offered valuable insights into the relationship between GenAI and the competencies of educational researchers in qualitative approaches). Results: A conceptual structure is displayed to answer questions, where the main theoretical concepts and their relationships are identified. Conclusions and future work: This initial conceptual structure is an analysis model for an in-depth literature review, where it will be possible Educational Research context to identify: 1) its user’s seniors and junior’s researchers; 2) the main tasks to be carried out with AI collaboration; and 3) the competencies (transversal and specific) to be acquired for the responsible and effective use of AI. Those three dimensions (users, tasks, and competencies) can be used to build an AI governance model that supports responsible use in Educational Research.
