Abstract

Introduction

Researchers undertaking studies in environments at risk of exclusion and social marginalization should possess a solid methodological foundation and practical experience. It is equally critical for researchers to be cognizant of the anticipated challenges and the unique characteristics of the target environment. This awareness, combined with researcher contemplativeness, is essential for conducting accurate and reliable research. Nonetheless, numerous methodological and ethical challenges are inherent in such research, particularly when focusing on communities at risk of exclusion and marginalization. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure that the research process is transparent and comprehensible to all participants at every stage, thereby fostering their sense of subjectivity and agency.

Goals and Methods

This presentation aims to reflect on the ethical dilemmas, methodological problems, and practical solutions involved in conducting qualitative research within environments at risk of exclusion and social marginalization. These reflections are grounded in the authors' own experiences and the literature of the subject on research involving individuals with intellectual disabilities and women engaged in sex work.

Results

The presentation will address the critical elements and conditions of the research process, particularly those related to data collection and interpretation. Emphasis will be placed on issues concerning the researcher's fieldwork, challenges in data acquisition, and the ethical and moral dilemmas intrinsic to this type of research undertaking. These issues, while specifically relevant to the study of communities affected by intellectual disability and sex work, have universal implications that extend beyond these specific groups.

Conclusions

The outcomes of our reflections contribute to the broader discourse on ethical dilemmas and methodological challenges in qualitative research within communities at risk of exclusion and social marginalization. Our analysis will also facilitate the formulation of best practices and provide recommendations for conducting research in such environments.
