The assumption of our paper is to respond to the abstract challenge of the climate transitions by shifting from a model of entrepreneurship based on individual, short-term incentives to one that is driven by co-agency, commitment and new capacities to act together in sustainable ways. We employ a co-creation research methodology that initiates and reiterates processes of enquiry — based on mutual affinities and learning, as well as reciprocal knowledge production and exchange. This co-research methodology acknowledges the complex realities of business across the cultural and creative sector while also allowing for anticipatory forms of innovation.
Our research question is: How can equity and co-agency be achieved through co-creation research?
Our research goal is to support artists and employees of cultural institutions in their sense of agency and creating conditions for them to take power over the narrative and the process of climate transformation.
In our assumptions, co-research focuses on inclusion, participation and iteration to ensure equity and engagement of participants - through flows and touchpoints of knowledge, power and agency. Co-research encompasses cross-disciplinary collaboration between academics and practitioners. It includes people from outside the research community and results in significantly less delay between research processes and the implementation of outcomes.
To achieve the research goal, cross-disciplinary teams initiated and work in a Real-World Lab environment, called the "Cultural Resilience Laboratory".
To answer the research question, we used the following data collection methods:
The results of our research show both opportunities and threats in implementing the assumptions of co-research, which result primarily from tensions generated by the logic of the research project, the approaches of different research perspectives, different organizational cultures, local versus global challenges, trends of tradition and the need for change.
