Introduction
Mathematics is one of the most complex subjects, since many students, from the first courses, end up rejecting it, being one of the reasons for concern when they need it in their university education. Hence the relevance of knowing what is the opinion that this subject has in university students
Objectives and Methods
The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which incoming university students in Health Sciences careers like mathematics. The sample is composed of 1552 students (533 males, 1012 females and 7 who do not want to answer) with a mean age of 18.98 (range 17 to 58 years). The methodology followed is MMR, being the quantitative analysis the relationship between gender and taste for mathematics (calculating this relationship with Cramer's V) and the qualitative part text analysis with ALCESTE.
Results.
The number of students who like mathematics is 1048, compared to 497 who say they do not like it.
The ALCESTE analysis yields five classes, which explain 70% of the corpus, with only one class collecting the verbalizations against mathematics, while the remaining ones give different evaluations of this subject:
Conclusions
Mathematics seems to be a liked subject among incoming Health Science students, which is important because they are going to have subjects that incorporate mathematics. However, it is still worrying that around 32% of these students state that they do not like mathematics, when this is the language of science. On the other hand, there do not seem to be differences between males and females, although the literature tends to show a greater anxiety of females towards mathematics. On the other hand, the qualitative analysis points out the value given to mathematics, grouped into four classes, as opposed to the only class that rejects mathematics
