Abstract

Abstract: This study delves into the ethical intricacies of a longitudinal triadic research project examining power dynamics in social work interventions involving family social workers, fathers, and mothers. Confidentiality and the potential influence of research on treatment outcomes emerge as central concerns within this methodological complexity. The question arises: Can the research itself avoid inadvertently shaping treatment processes and, consequently, research outcomes?
Goals and Methods: The study's primary objective is to unravel intricate power dynamics in family social work interventions. Employing a longitudinal triadic research design, it focuses on interactions between family social workers, fathers, and mothers. Participants engaged with a family social worker in an Israeli Department of Social Services. Separate interviews with fathers, mothers, and social workers explore their perspectives, experiences, and perceptions of family interventions. This approach facilitates an in-depth analysis of power relations within the triad, while the longitudinal aspect allows examination of evolving attitudes over time.
Results: Findings emphasize the ethical complexities in longitudinal triadic research. Participants' retrospective insights into past treatments raise concerns about research interviews influencing ongoing interventions. Confidentiality and information exchange between participants emerged as central ethical issues.
Conclusions: This research underscores the need for careful ethical consideration in longitudinal triadic research, especially within social work interventions. It prompts reflection on how research activities may impact ongoing treatment and the importance of preserving the therapeutic process's integrity. Future studies should continue addressing these ethical challenges to ensure responsible research conduct, safeguard participant welfare, and maintain treatment quality.
