Qualitative methods in the digital era- a systematic review of literature

Digitalization has had a profound impact on the world in various ways and has enabled digital means for data collection. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the acceptance of these tools and methods for research purposes. The objective of this review is to evaluate the literature on how digitization has shaped qualitative research methods. A systematic literature review was conducted by searching various databases, focusing on qualitative digital tools and methods. The review encompassed studies that reported original findings published in English between January 2019 and July 2023. The following databases were searched: Scopus, Science Direct, Ebsco host, and ProQuest Central, using the following keywords to search the databases: ("qualitative research" OR "digital data collection tools" OR "online qualitative data collection") AND ("digitisation" OR "4IR Qualitative research"). There has been a noticeable increase and shift in methodologies due to digitization, and it is imperative for qualitative researchers to continue exploring the different methods and tools. However, digital tools also present unique challenges that require further examination. This overview confirms that digital qualitative research methods are potentially affected by the new technological advancements facilitated by the digital era. More research is needed on the use of digital tools and technologies in research in emerging economies such as Africa.
