Abstract

Introduction: Case-based study is a student-centred teaching method, that bridge the gap between theory and practice and foster critical thinking and communication skills (Yu et al., 2021). One of the advantages of this educational methodology is the high motivation of the students in solving problems, in addition to putting them in contact with certain cases that were difficult for them to handle, if not in this way experience (Sebold et al., 2018; Nemec, Brower & Allert, 2020). The use of the narrative technique allowed an interpretative approach, ensuring the validity of the case-base study methodology (Stake, 2012). The use of narratives in the base case study, focusing on the nursing care process developed by the student in the context of clinical practice, allows the development of reflection and integration of nursing theories and models.
Objective: We performed a pilot study with nursing third-year students' using narratives, focusing on the clinical practice they have lived, to explore the integration of perspectives about nursing theories and models.
Metodology: This is an inductive study with a qualitative approach developed in the early September 2023. We chose qualitative methodology as a reference because illustrates better the process of understanding the students’ experiences and relevance of using case base study. All ethical and data protection issues have been ensured.
Results: From de 50 participants 45 were female, and 5 were male; all were aged 20-35. The data analysis was conducted according to a thematic axis in two thematic units: development of the critical thinking and self-awareness in recognizing the nursing theories and models.
Conclusions: This study identify the importance of using narratives on case-base study as a teaching strategy in nursing education. Also elevates the student’s integration and development of the critical thinking and self-awareness in recognizing the nursing theories and models.
