This paper comprehensively explores the science-technology linkage, employing quantitative and qualitative research methods to unravel the interplay between scientific articles and patents. By examining this relationship, our study aims to shed light on the profound impact of scientific knowledge, traditionally confined to academia, on technological advancement and innovation. We employ a rigorous methodology involving comprehensive analysis from the Web of Science and the Derwent Innovations Index. We utilise performance indicators, thematic maps, and content analysis to uncover the intricate connections between scientific and technological outputs. We use the Bibliometrix tool to identify the most frequent keywords and code them as unigrams, replacing words with unigrams in the abstracts of articles and patents and generating a thematic map of abstract bigrams. Adhering to the vocabulary fit criteria, we analyse the resulting communities and concepts from the thematic map to define inclusion and exclusion criteria for qualitative analysis. The selection of documents for content analysis and the preparation of the research report completes our approach. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, our study uncovers complex relationships between scientific and technological outputs and provides valuable insights into their dynamics from 2004 to 2023. The results of our research have substantial implications for the ongoing discourse within research and policy communities regarding the role of scientific knowledge in driving technological innovation. As a valuable resource, this study is a guiding compass for policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals seeking to harness the synergy between scientific research and technological development for societal and economic progress. Our comprehensive quantitative and qualitative research approach offers a nuanced understanding of the science-technology linkage, empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions and drive meaningful innovation.
