Abstract

Qualitative research holds undeniable significance in academia, offering a profound avenue to delve into human experiences and societal complexities. Despite this, it often remains overshadowed by its quantitative counterpart. While quantitative research relies on visual representations like tables and graphs, qualitative research relies on textual data such as narratives and direct quotations, leading to its underappreciation in some academic circles.

Respected scholars such as Coffey and Atkinson (1996), Dey (1993), Eisner (1997), Grbich (2007), Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), Radnofsky (1996), Slone (2009), and Yin (2011) have emphasized the crucial role of effective data display in qualitative research. Despite this advocacy, the incorporation of visual displays in published research remains underutilized (Onwuegbuzie & Dickinson, 2008; Verdinelli & Scagnoli, 2013).

Our research initiative systematically explores the application, development, and diversity of data displays in qualitative research literature. Analyzing 1,000 articles from eminent journals, we aim to go beyond cataloging visualization techniques and provide a comprehensive guideline of best practices. This includes understanding what makes specific displays effective for exploring different aspects of data and how researchers communicate their findings through displays and an overarching narrative.

Our goal is to enhance the visibility and impact of qualitative findings through effective visual representations. Displays draw on the inherent richness of qualitative data, facilitating comprehension and persuasive power. By emphasizing methodological precision and effective transmission of research findings, our research equips qualitative researchers with practical insights for data visualization. This enhances the clarity, coherence, and transparency of qualitative research, enabling scholars to convey their insights with greater impact.
