Abstract

Introduction: The World Health Organization states that four out of ten patients are victims of adverse events resulting from the provision of primary health care (PHC). As the home is conducive to the occurrence of adverse events and in the future, care at home will be decisive, especially in the health area and specifically in the area of Occupational Therapy (OT) intervention, where knowledge is scarce. Therefore, it was intended to find out what 12 Occupational Therapists were doing at home, in the Regional Administrations of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (ARSLVT) and in the Center (ARSC) about the causes of adverse events in this context of action.
Methodology: This is a qualitative, observational-descriptive study, in the multiple cases category. The sample was selected using a non-probabilistic, convenience and snowball method. Data were obtained through the application of a semi-structured interview, in online format, and analyzed using the webQDA software.
Results: It was shown that DS during OT intervention at home is a subject where knowledge is scarce and fragmented. Even, on the part of those professionals who obtained the Degree in the last 5 years. It was understood that the major causes of adverse events are related to the behavior of both the professional and the patient, families/main caregivers, infrastructure and patient accidents.
Conclusion: It is urgent to boost research on patient safety, especially in proximity contexts, in areas where knowledge is small and scarce, as is the case of rehabilitation carried out in the home context. Knowing in detail the main causes of adverse events, whether those that occurred or those that could be foreseen, it will be possible to predict, anticipate and consequently improve the care provided.
