DOE Applied to Mooring Line Truncation in Model Tests

Resumo

A scaled model test during the design phase is an important step to validate numerical data on the response of offshore moored structures and its mooring lines tensions. To represent these lines in the original shape and using the available tank facilities in the world, the scale factor implies in ultra-small diameters, which brings materials and instrumentation issues besides distortions of physical effects itself. Truncation methods can be implemented based on both static and dynamic similarity, introducing new unknown variables to the design (geometry of truncated model, materials and lengths of the segments). An investigation combining a technique called Design of Experiments (DOE) and numerical simulations is proposed to identify the ideal truncated configuration of a specific mooring line or a group of them by assuming a typical assembly composed by chain-suspended weight-elastic-chain portions. Defining plane motion responses as multiple objective functions, Surface Response Method and Factorial Design methods were compared aiming to find the best fitting to the original static offsets. A scaled model with optimized characteristics was built to validate the numerical simulations and so the truncation method using DOE. This technique with the appropriate assumptions is extendable to perform a model test of a moored platform in deep or ultra-deep waters.
