summary:
INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a pathology of idiopathic origin in humans. For this reason, it is difficult to make a link between an experimental model and a clinical trial. However, there are several experimental models capable of inducing osteoarthritis in animals, which vary in terms of the progression and speed of disease establishment, resulting in a different response according to its application. METHODS: Searches were conducted in the PubMed database with the descriptors: "Osteoarthritis induction models and rats knee and osteoarthritis knee", for the period from 2013 to 2023, and 101 results were found. The following inclusion criteria were adopted: publications in English, completely free manuscripts, associated data, and controlled and randomized trials. Review articles, systematic reviews, clinical trials, meta-analyses, books, and documents were excluded. After analysis, 22 articles were selected for this review. findings: The induction of experimental osteoarthritis can be performed in several ways, and can be applied both in vivo (animal) and in vitro studies. When performed in vivo, surgical, chemical, and spontaneous models have limitations for the study of the disease. However, spontaneous models are more similar to human OA. There is also the possibility of in vitro use using human chondrocyte cells
