Abstract

The effect of immobilization in calcium alginate gel on S. cerevisiae GSE16-T18 HAA1 cells was evaluated in fermentations using crude hemicellulose hydrolysate, which was obtained by acid pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse. Fermentations were carried out in repeated batches, using free and immobilized cells . Results show that fermentations with immobilized cells present higher ethanol yield as well as lower byproduct production, in comparison to the experiments performed with free cells.
