In this study, the usefulness of the Pontryagin’s maximum principle was illustrated for the optimization and operation of a penicillin production bioprocess conducted in batch mode, under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. By applying this principle, it was possible to determine the optimal profile of temperature that maximizes the antibiotic concentration at the end of the bioprocess and the solution found was considered feasible for implementation in real cases.
